CW Tools Window

Unread post by W4CG »

Hi Tom,

I am a new user of this excellent logging software. It's a beautiful piece of work. Using a MacBook with MacOS 10.14.5 connected to an IC-7610 via USB 2.0. The Help files have explained operations very well so far, but I am having trouble understanding how to fully use the CW Tools window.

With the Main Logging window open and the CW Tools window open, I am able to send CW in real time or in type-ahead mode. If I click on the <my call> button, my call sign is sent. However, the other buttons related to the current QSO do not function for me. Data on the Main Logging window is not automatically populating these these buttons. When I try manual entry, such as the <his call> entry field, I cannot return to sending CW text. I can only tab among the 4 entry boxes along the bottom of the window. Game over. I have looked through the Preferences and Help files but haven't figured out what I am doing wrong.

I am also curious about what to expect when checking off "Poll from TRX". I don't notice any change in behaviors.

Thanks in advance.

This is just a convenience function and may not very useful in practice. You can enter a name, a callsign or whatever. Press the button above to send out this data.

This has no effect for the IC-7610. It is useful for transceivers with a build in CW decoder (Elecraft)

Hi Tom,

Thank you for clarifying. If it were possible for those buttons and fields at the bottom of the CW Window to share the same data fields with the Main Logging screen, I would find it very useful in CW conversations. It would also be consistent with the high level of refinement found in the rest of the software. Thank you.

I just want to close out this topic with the resolution in case someone else arrives here with the same question.

Entering text in the three open fields along the bottom of the window, "Call sign", "Name", and "Info" will populate the corresponding fields of the Main Logging window, but not the other way around. It's a convenient way to enter that information during the conversational part of a CW QSO, although as a new user I started with the Main Logging window and got it backwards.

To return to sending CW text in real time, one needs to click anywhere along the light grey border of the CW Tools window. If the window size is extended, you will see a large darker area appear above the buttons that looks inviting as the text entry area for CW, but it will not be responsive. That was my second mistake as a first-time user. Now I keep the CW Tools window compacted, and the non-responsive part of the window is not even visible, so I can click anywhere in the background of the window to return to sending CW text in real time.

Incidentally, my K1EL Winkeyer WKmini works great with RUMlogNG for QSK CW.
